So you want to know more??

I'm Meredith MacKenzie, the founder of Parallel Wellness and a Registered Clinical Counsellor. Simply put, I love to talk about psychology, emotions and all the things that make us human. My goal for this blog is to share information, resources and a fresh perspective on what brings clients to our practice.

Hey there!!

Family relationships can feel strained when the same conflicts keep coming up. You may love each other deeply but still feel hurt, distant, or unsure how to reconnect. Emotionally focused family therapy can help families understand what’s beneath these patterns and find a healthier way forward.

Stress, growing independence, grief, separation, or mental health concerns can make it harder to listen and connect. Family therapy creates space to slow down, move away from blame, and better understand the feelings and needs shaping your relationships.

Hello, and welcome. We’re Parallel Wellness, a counselling practice based in British Columbia. We support families who want to feel more connected, work through conflict, and build healthier relationships.

If the same arguments keep happening, family members are pulling away, or it feels harder to understand each other emotionally, then emotionally focused family therapy can help. Together, your family can better understand the patterns keeping you stuck, rebuild trust, and learn new ways to respond with care and respect. Connect with a registered clinical counsellor, either virtually or in person, and schedule your session when you feel ready.

What Is Emotionally Focused Family Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, often called EFFT, is a form of family therapy that focuses on emotional connection and relationships.

At its heart, emotionally focused family therapy looks at how family members seek connection and respond when they feel hurt, worried, or unsafe.

For example, a parent who’s worried about their teen may become more controlling. The teen may feel judged and pull away. In response, the parent becomes more worried and pushes harder. Soon, both feel frustrated and unheard.

EFFT helps families recognize these cycles without blaming one person. Therapy focuses on what happens between family members during difficult moments and the emotional needs underneath their reactions.

This shift moves the focus away from blame and toward greater understanding and connection.

When Families May Benefit from EFFT

There doesn’t need to be a major crisis before a family seeks counselling. Sometimes, small problems build over time and make home feel tense or disconnected.

Families may consider therapy when:

  • Conversations often turn into arguments
  • Family members avoid difficult topics
  • A child or teen becomes distant or overwhelmed
  • Parents and teens struggle to understand each other
  • Separation, divorce, or a new family structure brings change
  • Grief or a move affects the whole family
  • School stress or mental health concerns affect family relationships
  • The family feels stuck in the same patterns

Emotionally focused family therapy can help families understand what’s behind these patterns and find healthier ways to respond to each other. Together, families can make a plan to move forward with more understanding and connection.

Understanding Negative Family Interaction Patterns

Most families don’t choose to fall into painful patterns. These patterns often grow over time.

Imagine a teen comes home upset and goes straight to their room. Their parent worries and starts asking questions. The teen feels pushed and shuts down. The parent feels rejected, so they ask more questions or become frustrated.

Soon, the argument isn’t really about what happened that day. It’s about the pattern between them. One person reaches out. The other pulls away. The first person pushes harder. The second person becomes more distant.

Another family may have a pattern where everyone becomes loud during conflict. Others may avoid hard conversations completely. Some family members may try to keep everyone happy while their own needs stay hidden.

These reactions can make sense when we understand the feelings underneath them. Fear can look like anger. Hurt can look like silence. Worry can look like control.

Emotionally focused family therapy helps families slow down these moments. With support, family members can begin to notice the cycle before it takes over.

How EFFT Strengthens Family Relationships

Strong family relationships don’t mean avoiding conflict. What matters is how families handle difficult moments and reconnect afterward.

EFFT helps family members express their feelings more clearly and understand what may be underneath someone else’s reaction. Anger may come from hurt, while frustration may come from fear or worry.

By understanding these deeper emotions, families can respond with more care and respect. Over time, this can help rebuild trust and create a healthier family dynamic.

Common Challenges Family Therapy Can Address

Families may seek counselling for many different reasons. There isn’t one type of family that needs therapy.

Family counselling may support families dealing with:

  • Frequent arguments or ongoing conflict
  • Communication problems
  • Parent and teen conflict
  • Emotional distance
  • Major family changes
  • Separation or divorce
  • Grief and loss
  • Stress, anxiety, or depression within the family
  • Trouble setting or respecting boundaries
  • Parenting challenges
  • Changes in family roles
  • Difficulty rebuilding trust

Sometimes family conflict points to a deeper issue, such as fear, worry, or a loss of trust. Emotionally focused family therapy helps families understand these patterns and find healthier ways to connect.

What to Expect During Family Therapy

Starting family therapy can feel vulnerable. It’s normal to wonder what will happen or worry that the therapist will take someone’s side. Family counselling isn’t about putting one family member on trial.

Instead, the therapist works alongside the family to understand how everyone experiences the relationship. They may ask about what happens during conflict, when the family feels most connected, and where communication tends to break down.

In emotionally focused family therapy, the therapist may also help family members notice the emotions beneath their reactions.

Sessions can sometimes feel uncomfortable. Families are talking about things that may have been hard to discuss at home. However, the therapist helps create a space where these conversations can happen with more care and structure.

The work also isn’t only about talking.

Families can practice new ways of listening, sharing feelings, responding to each other, and repairing connection after conflict. These skills can then become part of everyday family life.

Change usually takes time. Old patterns often developed over months or years, so families shouldn’t expect them to disappear after one conversation. Therapy offers a place to keep practising different ways of connecting.
